Garden DESIGN FOR A VERY STEEP GARDEN in Sevenoaks
The brief for this garden design project in Sevenoaks was simple… to create a garden for a growing family. What sounded so straightforward on paper, however, became one of our most challenging, and most rewarding, projects to date. Looking back at these photos today we still marvel at how we did it!
On the ground, this 30 x 15 metre Sevenoaks plot was a perilous slope, falling away from the back of the house with a drop of around 20 metres! The site was unusable and certainly not a safe space for the family’s children.
Working closely with structural engineers at all stages of the garden design and build Langdale Landscapes transformed this rocky outcrop into a safe, sophisticated and multi-layered garden complete with different seating areas, luscious planting and safe, easily accessible steps and pathways to a lawned play area below.
The critical engineering underpinning this project was stylishly realized with a leading-edge use of industrial materials. A mixture of Corten steel steps and granite paving edged with reinforced, rendered concrete walls and topped with stainless steel balustrades wove their way through newly created slopes, richly planted to tie the scheme together and soften the hard landscaping.
What was once an inhospitable and very steep rockery is now a stylish, usable, and easy to maintain space, a beautiful backdrop to this Sevenoaks home with easy access to the flatter garden area below.
This incredible garden took Langdale Landscapes eight months to build. We were thrilled when it won a Gold and the Best in Category APL Awards.
